“Explore the life of America’s first foreign missionary, Adoniram Judson (1788-1850), who was devoted to serving for over 38 years in Burma, no matter the cost. The son of a congregational minister, Judson was a precocious young man who aspired to gain exceptional worldly fame through some prominent secular career. But following a crisis of faith and a stunning turn of events that exposed the vanity of mere temporal pursuits, he went on to study for the Christian ministry and to dedicate his life to missionary service. With unshakable faith in God and His Word, Judson persevered through staggering difficulties. His unremitting labor and devotion were used of the Lord to spread the Gospel and to establish healthy Christian congregations throughout Burma. Judson’s example was an inspiration to untold thousands in his own day and still has the power to encourage and instruct believers today.” (Christian Focus Publications)
Endorsements:
“Adoniram Judson remains a fascinating individual and a missionary we do well to remember. There is a great deal we can learn from his life and ministry. Vance Christie is an excellent biographer who brings his subject to life in the pages of this book. I highly recommend it.”

“I absolutely loved this book! Vance Christie writes in such a way that brings the reader into the story from the first page of the book all the way through the epilogue. He seamlessly moves between his own words and quotes from Judson and various other sources and keeps the story flowing.”

Vance’s Story Behind the Book:
In 2004 I published a book with Barbour Publishing entitled Into All the World, Four Stories of Pioneer Missionaries. That work (which is not presently in print) provided abbreviated biographical accounts of David Brainerd, Adoniram Judson, Robert Moffat and John Paton. Subsequently I proposed to a number of publishers a full-length volume on Judson’s remarkable life of faithful, fruitful and sacrificial service. Christian Focus Publications accepted that proposal and is publishing the book this spring/summer of 2013.
It took me the better part of two years (on a very part-time basis, on the side of my full-time pastoral responsibilities) to write the Judson biography. The greatest difficulty I faced in composing a comprehensive (though not exhaustive) account of Judson’s long, eventful career was keeping the manuscript within reasonable proportions. My original rough-draft manuscript was 440 typed pages while the final manuscript I submitted to Christian Focus was trimmed down to 335 typed pages. CFP was gracious to accept that final manuscript in its entirety, all of which I thought was essential material for a complete account of Judson’s life and ministry.
Judson’s example will doubtless encourage and challenge modern-day Christians in a variety of ways. Personally speaking, his example challenges me to faithfully fulfill the specific ministry calling the Lord has for me, even when doing so entails trials and sacrifices. I am also encouraged by Judson’s ministry model to actively, fully employ the gifts and abilities God has given me to use in carrying out the ministries He intends for me.
